1. Your Facebook experience begins with “Adding a Friend.” Before adding a friend, however, ask yourself; “Knowingthat, for the most part, the person I am adding will have access to my information and content, would I trust them alonein my own home with access to all of my possessions and information.” If they don’t pass this test, consider not addingthem. If you choose to add them, apply your privacy settings so as to limit their access to certain areas of your profile.
2. What you post on Facebook is backed up and archived on Facebook servers, indefinitely. If what you post is sharedby others (your Friends), it in turn can be shared even further and is beyond your control to retrieve.
3. It’s a fact that most employers, colleges and universities, and really anyone considering hiring you or having you ontheir team, will look to your Facebook profile to arrive at a decision, based on the quality of what you post and the natureand tone of your profile, your “Like” pages, and in some cases, your Friend List.
4. While we all want to be social and open, to a degree, “less is better” when it comes to filling out details about yourselfand family members, and the quality of the content that you post (photos, opinions, videos, etc).
5. Consider not posting content (embarrassing photos or videos, personal details, cell or BlackBerry PIN numbers) thatcan be used against you, or shared with others beyond your Friend list. Also, tagging Friends in photos is immediatelyshared with their Friends, and, depending on their privacy settings, their Friends of Friends.
6. Creating Friend Lists allows you to customize the level of exposure to your content that you want each Friend, orgroups of Friends, to have into your profile. To create Friend Lists, on the left side of your Home (News Feed) page,click More, then Friends to reveal existing default lists and then click More. As the number of lists you can create isunlimited, generate as many lists as you wish to separate your different Friends and Interests.
7. To review how non-Friends see content in your profile, click the small gear icon inside your Cover Photo, then “ViewAs.” Scroll to the bottom and click “Show Older Stories.” You should see no content appear. If details do appear, adjustyour post settings in Activity Log. To view how each of your Facebook Friends sees you, enter their name in the “Viewas Specific Person” box at the top. Make privacy adjustments for specific Friends by creating Friends Lists (point 6).
8. On your Timeline Page, click “Update Info” (inside your Cover Photo) to begin setting privacy for a variety ofcategories. Click “Edit” to expand each of the six category’s settings and adjust each setting to Friends, or less.
9. Click “Friends,” which will open your Friend list. Mouse over the word Friends beside each profile picture. Fromhere you can either Unfriend that person, or click Settings to choose what you see from them in your News Feed. Onthe right side of the page click the small pencil then “Edit Privacy.” On “Who can see your Friend list” choose “Only Me.”Because many of our Friends have minimal or no privacy, we want to limit their access to our Friends List. This deniesaccess to our Friends to view our Friends’ content. Although this is a bit less social, it provides you with more control.
10. Click Photos to reveal Photos of You, Your Photos, Albums and Not Tagged. Adjust each photo album to Friends orless. Click on remaining categories to adjust privacy. You can also untag yourself from photos in Photos of You.
11. In the upper right of any page click the small gear icon and choose Privacy Settings. On “Who can see my stuff,”keep it at Friends or less for each of your posts.
12. Next click “Use Activity Log” to reveal a long column (left side) of categories (All, Your Posts, Posts You’re TaggedIn, etc) with EVERY action either you or your Friends and others have done on Facebook that affect you. Expand thecolumn on the left by clicking More. With the release of Facebook’s new “Graph Search,” it’s critical to review everypiece of content in every category. Go through each post and either Hide it, Delete it or reassign its privacy by going tothe right-side of the post and making adjustments. Depending on how long you’ve had Facebook, this will take sometime. As well, you can click on the far right side to a particular year, and make adjustments to each post throughout thatyear.
13. “Who can look me up” refers to Facebook search capability. To stay out of user search results, choose the settingFriends. To be found in Facebook search choose Everyone. Turn the 3rd choice, “search engine links,” off.
14. On the left side of the privacy page, click “Timeline and Tagging” and set the top six selections in this manner:FRIENDS > ON > FRIENDS > FRIENDS > ON > FRIENDS. By having your tag settings on, Facebook will notify you inthe event that you’ve been tagged BEFORE that tagged item appears on your Timeline. Keep in mind, however, that thetagged item of you still appears on the person that tagged you’s profile.
15. Further down the left side of the Privacy page, click “Apps” and “Apps others use.” Deselect ALL boxes.Otherwise, the developers of the apps your friends use, even if you don’t use them, can access your information in eacharea. In the next category choose and deselect “Instant Personalization.” You can view a short video inside of theInstant Personalization page to learn what occurs when the box is selected.
16. Based on the “On” tag settings in point 14, inside the “Activity Log” box on your Timeline page an orange-colourednumber reflecting the number of tags you have to review will appear. Click Activity Log>Timeline Review and click“Review x Posts.” If you want to stay tagged, click Add to Timeline. If, however, you do not want to be tagged(identified) in the photo, the most effective way to remove the tag is to click the actual picture, mouse over the picture toreveal and click “Options” at the bottom and choose “Report/Remove Tag.”
17. Consider not posting status updates that reveal your location or intentions (vacation, dates, who you’re with, youremotional state, your “opinion-of-the-day”) as, depending on your privacy settings and the settings of your Friends,these can be shared with others.
18. What you write on your Friend’s Timelines is viewable to their Friends, and beyond. Consider using the “Message”function on your Friend’s Timeline pages. This is a private, email-like function between you and them.
19. If you choose to remove Friends from your list, know that Facebook will never notify that person directly that you’veremoved them. It’s important from time to time to reevaluate the quality and relativity of our Friends, and it’s natural totrim the list to reflect current real-world friendships and relationships.
20. Facebook is a valuable communication tool on many levels, both personally and professionally - from keeping intouch with friends and family to staying abreast of companies and other organizations and entities that interest us in theworld. But recognize that nothing is ever truly private on Facebook, or on any site.
21. Default privacy on Twitter, Instagram and Tumblr are all public. This is not necessarily a bad thing if you createvaluable content you’d like to have discovered, or wish to share with a wider audience. But they also have privacy andblocking choices with the exception of Tumblr. Settings on these profiles are really a comfort choice.
22. Protecting tweets on Twitter must be done on a laptop. Go to Settings>Security and Privacy and select Protect myTweets, which allows you to approve all Followers and keeps your tweets visible only to this audience.
23. Making an Instagram photo profile private must be done within the app. This also allows you to approve Followers.

Social Networking sites offer measurable benefits and opportunities but also risks. Used with knowledge, care andpurpose (as well as being social), they can propel us forward in the direction of our goals and to levels of directengagement and influence with people and organizations that were previously not possible. This brief considers six social sites; Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Tumblr, YouTube, LinkedIn - and Blogging.
• Your "Friends" and "Followers" control the content that you post. Period!!!! They always have.
• You ARE what you post. Your online content defines you, which becomes your reputation and your story.
• Create AWESOME, compelling and interesting content across all of your online profiles. Add value to others.• Guide Friends and Followers to your other online profiles by including those links in your posts and updates.• We all will be "Googled" at some point. So, work to make yourself "Googleable" in the best light possible.
Privacy; by default, all new Facebook accounts and settings are set at either Public or Friends of Friends.• Understand, deeply, your privacy settings and set them to Friends, or less.
• Create "Friend Lists" and designate certain posts to be visible only to those folks. Subsequent comments andreplies will be circulated to only those people unless shared. Through adding value, work to cultivate a followingand become "selectively Public."
• #Hashtags is a function that allows for specific searches of topics and conversations. Use them strategically.
• Promote your best achievements, views and external profiles (Twitter, Instagram, Blogs, etc) while still enjoyingthe social aspect of your experience. In the "Edit Your Info" section under "Contact Info," consider populating theWebsite area with your Twitter Feed, Instagram, Blog, YouTube channel link and anything else you're proud of.
• "Follow" individuals, organizations and others whom you find inspiring, interesting and who add value to yourexperience. This is an exceptional Twitter-like function developed by Facebook in 2010.
• "Like" Pages that you want to engage with or simply gather information from. At the same time, because yourLike Pages are reviewed by future influencers, Unlike anything that is inappropriate or a risk to your reputation.

• Many organizations use Instagram to showcase their products, staff, customers, culture and trends.
• Commercially, many contests are running now on Instagram. By applying a contest-related #hashtag to yourphoto, they are tracked through the contest. This can also attract your work to the wider world and yourcomplete Instagram portfolio (which isn't necessarily a bad thing if you post awesome content).
• Although many people use Instagram socially, if you have aspirations in photography or other areas of your life,consider creating compelling content and apply influential and discoverable #hashtags, which may have yourphotos discovered by professionals.

• Privacy; by default, Twitter profiles and tweets are public but can be made private in your settings.
• Twitter is a remarkable resource for real-time information in the world today. For the first-time ever, we all have the
• opportunity to engage, directly, with people we admire, aspire to know, and want to work with.
• • Search at www.search.twitter.com anyone or anything (organizations, subjects, topics, specific #hashtags) thatyou'd like to engage with or simply gather information from and keep up-to-date with. Examples could be:.
• Follow them and listen first, to the conversation. Immerse yourself to understand what's going on with the flowand direction of tweet threads before chiming in with your contribution.
• Engage with those you Follow on an articulate and interesting level and you may be surprised when theyengage back through a Reply, Retweet or even Favourite your compelling and stimulating contribution.
• Aspire to get on their Twitter radar as someone who contributes, valuably, to their conversation,interests, views and causes.
• Maintain the human element of Twitter. It's all a conversation, so infuse your tweets with personal experiences,observations and anecdotes. This also makes you interesting, of value, and worthy of being Followed.
Privacy; all primary Tumblogs are public, however, a secondary blog can be created and password protected.Tumblr is a simplified blogging platform with limited tools, however, can still be searched in Google, based on your
settings. Many Tumblogs are visual; photos and video gifs, however, other blogs have a variety of styles.
• Follow other bloggers whom you find interesting and to be of value. If you like what they have to say, reblogtheir content. Doing this compliments them by exposing their work to the wider Tumblr community as well asgetting you noticed by them, and others, as being a supporter of their work.
• Blog about what you enjoy, or simply what you find interesting and on your mind, such as;.
• Restaurant experiences• Camps
• Travel; Vacations
• Movies or Book Reviews• Cultural events
• Hobbies & Interests.
• Apply influential and easily searchable keywords to your Tumblog as this makes it easier for other users todiscover your work.
• If you mention a third-party web site, famous individual, landmark, company or event, consider making thosewords a link to their site. This keeps your blog interesting, creative and a source of information for the reader.
Privacy; settings are flexible with each video controlled through your "Video Manager."
YouTube, a Google product, is an excellent way to visually illustrate your expertise, interests, views and abilitiesthrough the often influential medium of video. The benefit of YouTube is that you can produce your videos offlineusing a variety of production and editing software, then upload it to YouTube, apply privacy and permissionsettings and broadcast away!
• Begin by logging into your Google account and creating your own YouTube Channel.
• Student-athletes; an innovative way to communicate with post-secondary institutions is to upload edited
• recordings of your game highlights and performances. Make your URL available to athletics' recruiters.
• Post your work to your Channel and then adjust privacy, exposure, commenting and other permissions throughthe "Video Manager" associated with each video. Permissions can be varied for each video.
• Videos need not be of professional quality, however, they should be interesting and a reason to watch them, oreven better, a means to have your audience want to Follow your Channel.
• Apply influential and easily searchable keywords to your videos as this makes it easier for other users todiscover your work.
• Monitor your video posts for comment quality and remove any remarks you feel are offensive or spam, as wellas comments that violate YouTube's terms. Use discretion and take care, however, not to censor remarks thatare not offensive but simply express a differing opinion to your video. This often results in your work beingflamed and moved to a broader level of dissatisfaction resulting from your arbitrary censorship.

• Privacy; settings are public, however, customizable privacy settings are comprehensive.
• LinkedIn is widely considered the social networking site for professionals. Some have coined it thebusinessperson's Facebook. Either way, in terms of student use, it's recommended to start a Basic Linkedinaccount (free) and explore groups, discussions, trends regarding current and future employment and otheropportunities, and articles posted by influential, trend-setting professionals, in the areas that interest you.
• The site is being adopted by forward-thinking students with a plan toward their future who, although short onbusiness experience, find it an excellent venue to understand where future opportunities are going, and trackingnew ones that are developing. One of the most powerful figures on LinkedIn is Sir Richard Branson, Chairman ofVirgin Group. He posts consistently on hiring practices and strategies for candidates (at all levels), what he valuesin his employees and business partners, where various industries are headed as well as emerging trends. Sowhat could a student post to LinkedIn?

• Become "Googleable." The above methods of creating, building and maintaining your reputation online can beextremely beneficial when your future life-influencers (employers, co-ops, internships, schools, elite sportsteams, and more) search for who you are, what you've done in the past, how you represent yourself, and howyou contribute, on a number of levels.
• Know that your future influencers will also likely "Follow" or "Friend" you, often under random and totallyunassociated usernames to their professional role. The reasons are as listed in the above paragraph.
• Consider proactively offering to your future influencers a look into your online profiles by providing your Twitterfeeds, Instagram portfolios, Facebook public posts and Blog sites. This approach is unique and will certainlyhelp you to stand out.
